Middle & Upper Level ISEE: What to Expect
A guide for students in grades 7–12 preparing for the Middle or Upper Level ISEE.
The Middle Level (grades 7–8) and Upper Level (grades 9–12) ISEE share the same four-section structure but increase in difficulty. Here's what to expect and how to prepare.
Section Structure
Both levels include:
- Verbal Reasoning: 40 questions, ~20 minutes. Synonyms and sentence completion.
- Quantitative Reasoning: 37 questions, ~35 minutes. Number concepts and word problems.
- Reading Comprehension: 36 questions, ~35 minutes. Six passages with 5–6 questions each.
- Mathematics Achievement: 47 questions, ~40 minutes. Direct math problems.
There's also an essay (not scored, but sent to schools). Practice writing clear, organized responses under time pressure.
Content Differences
Middle Level
- Math: Pre-algebra, basic geometry, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions
- Reading: Longer passages, more inference questions
- Verbal: More sophisticated vocabulary
Upper Level
- Math: Algebra, geometry, some trigonometry, data analysis
- Reading: Complex passages, nuanced inference
- Verbal: Advanced vocabulary, subtle distinctions
Preparation Tips
- Start early: Give yourself 2–3 months of consistent practice.
- Take full-length practice tests: Build stamina. The real test is long.
- Review every mistake: Understand why you got each question wrong.
- Build vocabulary: Read widely. Use vocabulary lists for targeted study.
- Practice the essay: Even though it's not scored, schools read it. Clear, organized writing matters.
