Middle & Upper Level ISEE: What to Expect

A guide for students in grades 7–12 preparing for the Middle or Upper Level ISEE.

High school student studying

The Middle Level (grades 7–8) and Upper Level (grades 9–12) ISEE share the same four-section structure but increase in difficulty. Here's what to expect and how to prepare.

Section Structure

Both levels include:

  • Verbal Reasoning: 40 questions, ~20 minutes. Synonyms and sentence completion.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 37 questions, ~35 minutes. Number concepts and word problems.
  • Reading Comprehension: 36 questions, ~35 minutes. Six passages with 5–6 questions each.
  • Mathematics Achievement: 47 questions, ~40 minutes. Direct math problems.

There's also an essay (not scored, but sent to schools). Practice writing clear, organized responses under time pressure.

Content Differences

Middle Level

  • Math: Pre-algebra, basic geometry, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions
  • Reading: Longer passages, more inference questions
  • Verbal: More sophisticated vocabulary

Upper Level

  • Math: Algebra, geometry, some trigonometry, data analysis
  • Reading: Complex passages, nuanced inference
  • Verbal: Advanced vocabulary, subtle distinctions

Preparation Tips

  1. Start early: Give yourself 2–3 months of consistent practice.
  2. Take full-length practice tests: Build stamina. The real test is long.
  3. Review every mistake: Understand why you got each question wrong.
  4. Build vocabulary: Read widely. Use vocabulary lists for targeted study.
  5. Practice the essay: Even though it's not scored, schools read it. Clear, organized writing matters.
