Lower Level Math: Topics and Practice Strategy
Key math topics for grades 5–6 and how to structure your practice.
The Lower Level ISEE (grades 5–6) tests math concepts from upper elementary and early middle school. Understanding the key topics and how to practice effectively can make a significant difference in scores.
Key Topics
Number Sense
- Fractions: Equivalent fractions, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing
- Decimals: Place value, operations, converting to/from fractions

Operations
- Order of operations: PEMDAS (parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction)
- Word problems: Translating words into equations, multi-step problems
Geometry
- Area and perimeter: Rectangles, triangles, circles
- Basic shapes: Triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons
- Angles: Complementary, supplementary, angles in triangles
Data
- Tables and graphs: Reading and interpreting data

Practice Strategy
-
Diagnose first: Take a mixed quiz to see where you stand. Identify which topics are strong and which need work.
-
Target weak areas: Use our topic filter to focus on one topic at a time. Don't skip the basics — weak number sense undermines everything else.
-
Review explanations: After each quiz, read the explanations for missed questions. Understanding why an answer is correct prevents future mistakes.
-
Build stamina: Gradually increase quiz length. Test day is long — practice sitting and focusing for 20–30 minutes at a time.
-
Time yourself occasionally: The ISEE is timed. Practice under timed conditions occasionally to build speed and pacing.
